Mobile and me

This post would be partly a follow-up to the Open Hardware and Mobiles post made yesterday. There would be comparison between a Nokia model I own from two years and looking at a new one.

One of the things I do disagree with strongly was a statement in one of the mails on the openmoko list which said something to the effect that ‘regular people do not value freedom in their phones’. While this may be true in the United States and other countries where Sim Lock and bundling are prevalent its not the case atleast in India. There is possibility also that the message was meant for the German audience as they are some of the biggest users it seems of the technology.

In India price is the main concern and as can be seen on the only distributor of the phone in India its priced at 24k plus which is beyond the reach of most average Indians including me. There might also be possibility of it being pricier as there is only one distributor hence monopoly profits.

For same/similar amount I could buy a netbook, a basic laptop or a desktop so atleast for the immediate and medium future, this phone seems to be out.

So what do I have as of this moment is the most basic Nokia phone, the Nokia 2310 which I bought about 2 years ago. I looked at the basic models and was given the 1661 and 1662 . Here’s my comparison between the one I have and the one which is there in the market.

Parameterr Nokia 2310 Nokia 1662
Dimensions 105.4 x 43.9 x 19.1 mm 108 x 45 x 13.8 mm, 65.9 cc
Weight 85 g 82 g
Display Type CSTN, 65K colors TFT, 65K colors
Display Size 96 x 68 pixels, 4 lines, 1.5 inches 128 x 160 pixels, 1.8 inches
Phonebook Memory 200 entries 500 entries
Internal phone memory none 4 MB
Battery Standard battery, Li-Ion 970 mAh (BL-5C) Standard battery, Li-Ion 860 mAh (BL-4C
Price Rupees 2,150 Rupees 1,875

Analysis :- So what do I make of it, well the display is of better technology as far as brightness is concerned but the power consumption of TFT is also much more than CSTN . The phone weight hasn’t decreased much over the 2 years, although some internal memory has come in. The battery model is older than the one which my mobile phone has. It may have to do with the issue Nokia had a year back. So what am I am going to do, either look into Samsung is offering or wait till a better battery and display technology/product comes up 🙂

Adios for now 🙂
